Kössen lies in the Kaiserwinkl, in the far north-east of Tyrol on the Bavarian border. From our holiday apartment on Mühlbergweg it is a ten-minute walk to the village and a few minutes by car to the Unterberghorn cable car. All distances on this page are measured from the apartment.
Unterberghorn cable car · 2.7 km
The Unterberghorn is Kössen’s local mountain. The valley station is only a few minutes’ drive away; the children’s ski area (2.8 km) and the practice lift (2.9 km) are right next to it – ideal for little ones making their first turns. Afterwards, skis and boots dry in the ski room of the house.

Not every winter day belongs to skiing. Around Kössen there are cleared winter walking paths and places to go tobogganing. We usually know first-hand which paths and runs are open – just ask us.

The Kaiserwinkl is known for its extensive network of cross-country trails linking the villages of the region – for classic and skating styles. The Kaiserwinkl tourist board publishes the current trail report.

Every winter balloonists from many countries meet in Kössen. Colourful hot-air balloons then float above the snowy valley, and at the balloon night glow they light up the dark. Even if you do not fly yourself, it is well worth watching.
Unterberghorn · 2.7 km to the cable car
Kössen is one of the best-known flying areas in the Alps. Pilots launch from the Unterberghorn and land in the valley – on fine days the colourful gliders hang in the sky above the valley. Flight schools in the village offer tandem flights; flying continues in winter, too.
Hochplatte (1,586 m) · 10 km
From gentle valley paths to summit tours, everything is here. The valley trails suit families, while the Hochplatte is a rewarding summit. There is bicycle parking at the house for your bikes. For children, the high-ropes course at Masererpass (10 km) is a good tip.

Kössen’s golf course is less than three kilometres from the apartment – close enough for a round in the late afternoon when the sun is already low.

Walchsee is the bathing lake of the Kaiserwinkl. It is about a quarter of an hour by car – for swimming, stand-up paddling or a stroll along the shore.

Boats to the Herreninsel with King Ludwig II’s palace depart from Prien (approx. 33 km). A classic day trip across the border into Bavaria.

The Festspielhaus and the Passionsspielhaus in Erl are just under half an hour away – opera and concerts in the middle of the mountains.
